What is EMDR Therapy & When Would I Consider It?

Feeling Stuck? When EMDR might be helpful...

EMDR -“Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing”, formulated by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987, has become a “best practice” used in the counseling field. Its growing popularity is likely there for several reasons:

  1. It combines several well recognized therapy approaches into one. It utilizes elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, free association, relaxation & breathing, exposure, and guided imagery.
  2. There is scientific evidence that has consistently verified its effectiveness in decreasing or eliminating symptoms. It uses a method to stimulate the right & left side of the brain, bringing together your logical, analytical side and your emotional, creative side at the same time in order to process events of your life. Methods used keep one grounded in the present while processing emotions from the past.
  3. It is a very focused, concise type of therapy that can accelerate the healing process in fewer counseling sessions, thus conserving time and financial resources for participants.

Most of us have events from the past that have interfered with living life to our fullest in the present. Traumatic events from the past may include (but not limited to):

* Death of a close friend or family member

* Accidents of various kinds

* Sexual abuse, rape, date rape

* Natural disasters

* Victim of crime

* Health crisis

* Financial crisis

* Early childhood losses

* Difficult, abusive, neglectful or absent (physical or emotional) parents

Negative thoughts, beliefs about oneself, emotions and body memories can become "stuck" as a result of the trauma, the lack of resources, relational & emotional support at the time of the trauma.

EMDR is a method to help process and dislodge these negative "stuck" places and allow you to live more fully in the present & future.

EMDR is especially effective with panic attacks, anxiety, grief, phobias, performance anxiety, social anxiety, stress reduction, sexual abuse, eating disorders, addictions, past trauma, low self-esteem.
